The period 1959-1977: the abandonment of traditional forms

"I suddenly got tired of rectangles; I found round objects more inspiring. Not being arbitrarily placed on a plate, they establish a relationship between emptiness and fullness. It comes down to Lao Tzu: the relationship of empty and full. To those of my copperplates that were not included in books, I gave titles referring to Australian Aborigines, Amerindian cultures, ancient Egypt, Etruscan or Greek civilization. I was sensitive to the musical consonance of these words and while remaining within the field of abstract art, I wanted to establish a relationship between the forms of my prints and symbolic objects such as the Cycladic idols, masks, totems, and the bark paintings of Australian Aborigines. This is the graphic transposition of the spirit of these objects, magical if not sacred." Ferdinand Springer
