"My first visit to Stanley Hayter at Atelier 17, where I learnt to master etching, took place in 1932. I remember his workshop on the ground floor of the courtyard at17 rue Campagne Première. It was quite a large workshop with a glass canopy on the side of the courtyard. The place was an incredible mess with a very poetic atmosphere. Several huge presses lined up next to large bins that gave off a smell of sulfuric acid, a large canvas hung on the wall. Several students worked there ... later, Giacometti, Tanguy, Miro, Vieira da Silva and Raoul Ubac joined the workshop 17. " Ferdinand Springer
